A major tragedy on Mount Prenj was narrowly avoided two days ago. The lives of several hikers were separated from death by just one wrong step, writes the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).
A group of about 30 hikers from the Zenica-based association „Vedro“ came across an anti-personnel mine placed in the middle of a well-known hiking trail on Monday. The unfortunate incident, which fortunately passed without consequences, occurred on the famous hiking trail leading from the village of Bijela to Jezerce on Mount Prenj in Herzegovina, a route used by dozens of hikers almost daily.
It is most likely a mine left over from the last aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, it is strange that hikers use this trail every day and no one had noticed the mine until now. It was fully functional, with a detonator that activates under a pressure greater than just three kilograms.
From the Konjic Mountain Rescue Service (GSS), they recounted how their colleague from Zenica, Armin Gazić, who also led the group of Zenica hikers on Prenj, reported the explosive device on the hiking trail. After that, their members notified the Civil Protection and BHMAC. The mine was removed within a few hours, thus averting a major tragedy.
It would have been enough for just one of the hikers to step on this mine, after which the lives of other hikers nearby would have been in danger, writes NAP.
