Stone sarcophagus relocated from Botanical Garden of the National Museum to protect it from decay

(Patria) - The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina today successfully relocated a stone sarcophagus from the Botanical Garden to the depot of the ancient lapidarium to protect it from decay. In this activity, significant assistance was provided by workers from the company Neimari d.o.o., who were responsible for loading and unloading the stone sarcophagus.

"A team of conservators and staff of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the help of workers from Neimari d.o.o., jointly worked on relocating the stone sarcophagus that V. Radimsky brought to the Museum in 1891 from Bišće polje near Mostar. The stone sarcophagus has been in the Botanical Garden since its establishment and on this occasion was moved to the depot of the ancient lapidarium to protect it from decay caused by external atmospheric influences.

Stone, seemingly a durable material, is susceptible to decay under the influence of air pollution, especially in large cities, as well as under the influence of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and lichens, which cause damage to the surface or structure of the stone. From now on, the sarcophagus will be in an indoor space with an appropriate microclimate and will thus be protected," stated the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Incidentally, Vaclav Radimsky belongs to the first generation of experts at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although he worked as a geologist on organizing collections of minerals and geological material, he is permanently remembered for his contribution to the research of archaeological, prehistoric, and ancient sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
