More than 3,000 migrants were rescued today off the coast of Sicily in as many as 30 separate rescue missions, the Italian coast guard announced, reports the Patria News Agency.
The latest rescues occurred just a day after about 6,500 refugees were rescued in one of the largest operations organized off the Libyan coast in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday, the BBC reports.
The migrants are mostly from Eritrea and Somalia, and some of them jumped into the sea and swam to the rescue boats.
The unstable political situation in Libya has turned the country into a transit area for human traffickers, writes Index.
