Institute for Health and Food Safety and Ministry of Health of Zenica-Doboj Canton: Preventive Skin Examinations and Early Detection of Skin Cancers

(Patria) - The Institute for Health and Food Safety Zenica, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of the Zenica-Doboj
Canton, has launched a comprehensive Program for Early Detection of Malignant Skin Tumors in the Zenica-Doboj Canton.

The main goal of this program is to raise public awareness about the importance of regular preventive skin examinations and
to provide all citizens of the Zenica-Doboj Canton with access to free and professional examinations. The program also emphasizes the importance of preventive measures, such as using protective creams, avoiding tanning beds, wearing appropriate clothing, and avoiding excessive sun exposure.

Specialist Dermatologist Examinations

During this preventive examination, dermatology specialists use a dermatoscope – a specialized device that allows for a detailed examination of the skin and the detection of potentially dangerous skin changes. During these examinations, dermatologists examine moles and other skin changes and advise patients on further steps if they notice anything suspicious. Examinations are open to all citizens, with special attention paid to those at higher risk, such as people with fair skin, people with a large number of moles, or people who are frequently exposed to the sun due to work or recreation.

Examinations are conducted in 11 municipalities of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, providing wide accessibility of services to all
citizens.

Why are Preventive Skin Examinations Important?

Regular dermatological examinations are crucial for the early detection and treatment of skin diseases. Through this program, we aim to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to receive a professional assessment and, if necessary, timely treatment.

In addition to free preventive skin examinations, the program also includes educational activities. This includes the distribution of informational materials, organizing workshops and lectures, and social media activities. The goal of these activities is to increase awareness about the importance of sun protection for the skin, as well as about regular preventive skin examinations, recognizing the early signs of melanoma, and promoting healthy habits regarding sun exposure.
