Inzko: I am very concerned about the increasingly present tendency to glorify war criminals

High Representative Valentin Inzko met yesterday in Sarajevo with Adam Dieng, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General for the Prevention of Genocide.

In light of recent verdicts by the Hague Tribunal, they exchanged views on the insufficient level of reconciliation, which affects Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.

They expressed concern over the fact that twenty-two years after the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, key political leaders have not done enough to acknowledge the suffering of innocent civilians/victims of other nationalities.

 The High Representative said that it is extremely detrimental to the reconciliation process in BiH when prominent political figures deny genocide and other war crimes.

- I am very concerned about the increasingly present tendency to glorify war criminals, deny genocide and war crimes in general. Such unacceptable rhetoric would disqualify anyone who claims to strive for European values and norms - said the High Representative.

The Special Adviser and the High Representative emphasized the importance of key actors redoubling their efforts on preventive work and maintaining peace.
