Inzko calls for recognition of the horrific nature of the genocide

People of good will across Bosnia and Herzegovina stand in solidarity with the thousands of family members who lost their loved ones in the Srebrenica genocide - said High Representative Valentin Inzko today before attending the ceremony marking the 19th anniversary of the massacre, reports the Patria news agency.

- Across the country, in all communities, citizens are remembering those who were killed in Srebrenica in July 1995. Showing compassion and solidarity with the bereaved is a normal reaction of honorable people. Here in Srebrenica, at this solemn moment, we are witnessing the reburial of victims whose remains have been identified - said the High Representative.

He further added that respect for the right to a dignified burial is as old as civilization itself – and that is what distinguishes human beings from other creatures.

- And as we remember the innocent victims of Srebrenica and all innocent victims of the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is our duty to renew the promise made to the living, to renew our commitment to respecting the rights of all BiH citizens to live and work with dignity, to live without fear, without material deprivation – because it is clear that these rights have not yet been fully ensured - added Inzko.

The High Representative called on political and religious leaders in BiH to recognize the special and horrific nature of the Srebrenica genocide and to acknowledge the ongoing suffering of all those who lost their loved ones in the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
