(Patria) - Canada officially announced on April 23 that it will be a co-sponsor of the Resolution ‘International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide’ which will soon be adopted by the United Nations General Assembly.
Immediately after that, a strong campaign by Canadian genocide deniers against Canadian co-sponsorship was organized. Letters were sent to the most responsible political and academic entities in Canada. Threats were also sent to the director and members of the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada {IGK}.
IGK responded with facts.
Canada has been marking July 11 as the 'Srebrenica Genocide Victims Remembrance Day' since 2010. Since 2015, the Srebrenica genocide and Srebrenica Remembrance Day have been included as part of the 'Month of Remembrance, Condemnation and Awareness of Genocide' every April in Canada. The Srebrenica genocide is already being studied in some Canadian educational institutions. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg houses a permanent exhibition on the Srebrenica genocide. A monument to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide has been erected in the Canadian city of Windsor. The Canadian Parliament organized a petition calling on the Government of Canada to criminally sanction deniers of the Srebrenica genocide in Canada.
In response to the anti-civilizational campaign by genocide deniers in Canada, IGK responded with activism against hate speech and by highlighting the need for tolerance based on truth, justice, culture of remembrance, and respect for international court rulings.
"We remind the deniers of the Srebrenica genocide in Canada once again that the Resolution does not mention the Serbian people, Serbia, or the RS entity anywhere. Only the rulings of international courts are mentioned. The anti-civilizational propaganda in Canada and the world has done something unimaginable, that the crime of individuals who committed genocide is being attributed to the Serbian people and that the people are being deceived into believing that the Resolution holds them responsible for committing genocide.
The Resolution aims at remembrance through educational programs that are adopted at the global level in the name of questioning, reflecting on, and relating to what happened in Srebrenica. This is a civilizational measure to warn the world, by summarizing the results reached by international courts, so that such a thing never happens again. The Resolution is also a warning to the United Nations because they failed to protect Srebrenica as a protected zone.
Those who oppose the adoption of the Resolution on the Srebrenica genocide in the United Nations show a serious civilizational, moral, and legal decline," stated IGK.
IGK has formed a special team composed of genocide researchers, human and freedom rights activists, and legal experts who will respond to these anti-civilizational actions.
"The desire of Vučić and Dodik, with the help of paid Russian lobbyists whose joint teams have planned anti-civilizational actions against the Resolution, is for at least one major country, a member of the seven most developed countries in the world, to withdraw from co-sponsorship. They will not succeed in this with Canada," they conclude.
