IGES on Dodik's dreams: The model of ethnically pure states is outdated

(Patria) - The Institute for Geopolitics, Economy and Security (IGES) told the leader of SNSD and RS, Milorad Dodik, today that the model of ethnically pure states is outdated.

This reaction from IGES followed Dodik's statements made last weekend, that Serbs in this century should "form a unified state, consisting of Serbia, RS and Montenegro, through democratic means and political measures, not war, and leave it to future generations".

"For a political center, which has ambitions to influence other states, to achieve that, it must be intellectually, technologically, economically, and in every other way far more advanced than those over whom it wishes to project its power.

History records many cases where this was feasible, but also examples where it failed.

In modern times, the European Union is an example where other states ask Brussels to join the EU and cede a significant part of their sovereignty, all for the sake of the well-being of their own citizens.

Opposite examples are the Soviet Union and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, where states, which were under absolute control for 45 years, wished to leave such state communities.

Yugoslavia was managed from Belgrade, and that model proved unsuccessful for several reasons, leading to its collapse in bloody wars waged by Serbia against Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.

The way of organizing a state on European soil, according to Dodik's ideas of changing the borders of other sovereign states, would also mean the disintegration of the European Union itself and the destruction of the liberal-democratic order.

That order was created over centuries, based on the sovereignty of states, precisely to permanently stop bloody religious and ethnic wars on European soil.

Therefore, the realization of Dodik's dreams of ethnically pure territories is an outdated model, for the simple reason that Europe itself would embark on self-destruction", IGES stated.
