Air quality still impaired in Sarajevo Canton, chronic patients advised to avoid outdoors

(Patria) - Air quality remains impaired in most of Sarajevo Canton, but improved compared to the previous day.

During the past night and morning hours, the inversion weakened in most parts of the Canton, leading to a partial clearing of the atmosphere.

However, weather conditions continue to be unfavorable for air quality, so a temperature inversion is expected again towards the evening hours, with weak winds, causing the accumulation of polluting PM10 and PM2.5 particles.

Current data from monitoring stations confirm this.

According to the latest measurements at 2:00 PM, the highest values of this pollutant were recorded at Bjelave, amounting to 133 micrograms per cubic meter of particles, at Otoka they were 119 micrograms per cubic meter, and in Ilijaš 90 micrograms per cubic meter of particles, which is the threshold for the Warning episode. At other monitoring locations, PM10 values are above 50 micrograms per cubic meter.

According to the synoptic forecast, the weather situation for today and the next two days is expected to involve intermittent rainfall and weak winds of variable direction, with temperature inversions in the morning and evening hours. It is predicted that by December 14th at the latest, the temperature inversion will cease, which should result in an improvement in air quality.

Considering the above, the Warning episode remains in effect in all zones designated for the implementation of the Intervention Measures Plan.

Persons with chronic lung and heart conditions, as well as those prone to severe allergic reactions, the elderly population, pregnant women, and young children are advised to avoid spending time outdoors, especially in the early morning and evening hours.
