Huskić: BiH is an object of international relations that great powers are settling scores over

Political analyst Adnan Huskić assesses that Russia's refusal to vote for the UN resolution, which would bring Bosnia and Herzegovina closer to NATO and the European Union, is yet another in a series of escalating relations between Russia and the West, in which BiH is merely collateral damage. However, Huskić believes that Russia's latest move should not further destabilize the situation in BiH, at least not to a greater extent, writes the BiH news agency Patria (NAP).

The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution supporting the EU mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina despite Russia's abstention. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin stated on the occasion that EUFOR has been present in BiH for ten years and plays a significant role in preserving peace after the last war, but at the same time, Russia does not agree to the presence of foreign troops, which it perceives as an instrument to accelerate BiH's integration into NATO and the EU.

A large number of diplomats, including British diplomat Michael Tatham, expressed concern that Russia is showing contempt for the Euro-Atlantic future of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Analyst Huskić believes that Russia actually showed restraint when it came to supporting the UN mission in BiH, simply because it is part of their general discourse towards the West.

- Bosnia and Herzegovina in this entire story is absolutely just an object of international relations, which found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time and with which they can settle scores – Huskić told Patria.

In fact, Huskić believes, Russia is only opening another front with the West through Bosnia and Herzegovina, writes Patria.
