Hrasnica: We are making a carpet from 23,520 plastic caps for Guinness

"Čepoćilim" for the Guinness Book of Records is a project that could be realized by the end of the year. It is a carpet ten meters long and three meters wide made of plastic caps of various colors in the motifs of an old Bosnian carpet, said Alma Hrasnica, president of the ecological association Green Art from Sarajevo, for the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

Last year, this association made the first čepoćilim of three square meters, for which they used 2,500 plastic caps. According to Hrasnica, this carpet is still intact after several exhibitions.

- The idea of čepoćilim arose from the need to raise the ecological awareness of citizens, primarily children. We wanted to show that waste can be art. I currently have about 10,000 caps, and I need 784 caps per square meter – Hrasnica states for NAP.

This means that 23,520 caps are needed for the carpet they intend to make (30 square meters). Cap collection campaigns have been ongoing for some time, and the UNITIC business center has provided space for this project.

- I have had UNITIC's support from the very beginning, and I presented the first čepoćilim there, among other places. I am currently working on the design of the carpet for Guinness. I have created a wonderful design of a real old Bosnian carpet. The red color will prevail the most, as I have the most caps of that color – says Hrasnica.

She mentioned that this project is unique because such a carpet has not yet been made for the Guinness Records. She also needs help, as this type of art is rather expensive considering the quantity of caps, glue, promotional material, and cap preparation.

- In the next two months, I will intensify the work on collecting caps, we need various colors, and I hope that the čepoćilim could be completed by the end of the year – says Hrasnica for Patria.

At the beginning of this month, specifically at the 11th Kid's Festival from June 6 to 10, she collected caps, and she says the response from children and their parents was above all expectations.
