Thousands of participants at the commemoration of the Igman March

(Patria) - Thousands of participants from across the region have arrived at Igman to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Igman March.

This is a remembrance of the partisan army's march across the Sarajevo Field on Igman, on the night of January 27, 1942. The march was carried out by the First Proletarian Brigade in harsh winter conditions at a temperature of minus 32 degrees Celsius.

At the end of January 1942, after clashes at Pjenovac and Bijele Vode, the First Proletarian Brigade found itself surrounded by strong German-Ustasha forces on Romanija, after which the headquarters made a decision to carry out a dangerous but only possible maneuver. The goal was to pass by Sarajevo, across Igman, towards liberated Foča. Data on the number of march participants is incomplete, ranging from 500 to 700 partisans.

The president of SABNOR of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bakir Nakaš, said today that between 15 and 20 thousand people attend the Igman commemoration every year, and he is convinced that this number will grow year after year. These numbers show, he said, that people have respect for the event from 1942.

The president of SABNOR of Sarajevo Canton, Ibrahim Čomić, said that fascism and neo-fascism are still present in Europe and the world, which is why he considers today's commemoration of the Igman March to be the creation of a new anti-fascist front that will triumph as it did in World War II.
