Thousands of participants at the commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the Igman March

IGMAN, (Patria) - A large international anti-fascist event will be held today on Igman to mark the 78th anniversary of the "Igman March". Transportation for participants starts at 9 AM in front of the National Museum, with a brief stop in Plandište, from where the column of the First Proletarian Brigade set off up Igman.

At 10:30 AM, delegations will lay flowers at the partisan and martyr memorial on Brezovača. After handing over the flag of the First Proletarian Brigade to the commander of the march, the column will proceed towards Veliko Polje.

Delegations will lay flowers at the martyr cemeteries on Igman. The arrival of the marching column at the central monument of the First Proletarian Brigade is expected at 1 PM. A joint lunch is planned on the plateau of Veliko Polje, with socializing and reminiscing about the Igman March.

As every year, tens of thousands of participants from the countries of the former Yugoslavia are expected to attend the 78th anniversary of the Igman March.

On the night of January 27, 1942, the march was carried out by the First Proletarian Brigade in harsh winter conditions at a temperature of minus 32 degrees Celsius. At the end of January 1942, after clashes on Pjenovac and Bijele Vode, the First Proletarian Brigade found itself surrounded by strong German-Ustaše forces on Romanija, after which the staff decided to carry out a dangerous but only possible maneuver. The goal was to pass by Sarajevo, across Igman, towards liberated Foča. Data on the number of participants in the march is incomplete, ranging from 500 to 700 partisans.
