Heroes of Sarajevo Forgotten by All: Nusret Needs Our Help Today, Let's Be Just a Little Human

Nusret Hodžić, known as Huso, is well remembered by all who were on the Sarajevo battlefield and in Herzegovina. Wounded three times, a member of the Special Unit for Special Purposes of the Supreme Command Staff of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, company commander of the 101st Brigade, a member of the Army from the first to the last day... Nusret, who is seriously ill today, is visited only by his fellow soldiers, Patria reports.

One of them is Edin Musić. Both he and Nusret were 22 years old when the war started, Edin tells us.

-Nusret was a member of the Patriotic League in 1990. And from April 1992, a member of the Military Police stationed in the Mladen Stojanović Home building in Sarajevo. He was wounded once seriously and twice lightly. In July 1992 at Poljine, in November of the same year at Dobrinja, in May 1994 near Jablanica, and that year Nusret also had a heart attack, Edin tells us.

Nusret spent a year training in Turkey, held the rank of captain, but it was taken from him and he was demoted to the rank of sergeant because he did not have a university degree. Already in 2005, he went into early retirement as a 60 percent disabled person, with a pension of 326 KM.

Today, with a non-working wife and three children (17, 14, and 13 years old) whom he is educating, Nusret lives on 470 KM per month, his pension and child allowance. They live in Binježevo, near Sarajevo.

Misfortune never comes alone. This family has also experienced that. Problems began two years ago when Nusret fell seriously ill.

-He had a leg fracture, after which he spent 4 months in Orthopedics. Cancer affected the knee, although no one has yet determined where the primary site is. A month ago, they wanted to amputate his leg. Thanks to orthopedist Senad Maksić, Nusret still has his leg. He helps him in every possible way, the only one who treats him as a hero fighter. Others just want to remove him from state support because his treatment is supposedly expensive, Edin explains.

Just for painkillers, Nusret needs 400 KM per month. One patch costs 17 KM, and he needs about 15 of them.

- For suppositories and tablets, he doesn't even know how much he spends anymore. Currently, they all live literally on alms and help from friends, mostly from the Military Police unit we were in, Edin says.

They would love to train football

Edin tells us he asked Nusret's sons, given that they are teenagers, what sports they play. They told him they really love football, but everything costs money, so they mostly sit at home after school.

Pomozi.ba and good people in action

The association Pomozi.ba organized a fundraising campaign for Nusret and his family, and Edin took clothes and food to his fellow soldier. Hodžić was also visited by several, as Edin told us, "good people" who helped this family from their own pockets.
