Haračić: Lukavac one of the most polluted cities in Europe

Lukavac is one of the most polluted cities in Europe. Within less than four square kilometers, there are seven large polluters and five smaller ones, and some of them do not even have an environmental permit to operate, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

DF representative in the Federal Parliament Amra Haračić stated that, according to air quality monitoring devices, the sulfur dioxide value in Lukavac on November 12 this year reached up to 706 micrograms per cubic meter, which is twice the upper permissible limit of 350 micrograms.

- Citizens of Lukavac have no idea what air they are breathing, because the measuring devices, which often do not even work, do not have displays, nor do they send an audible signal when sulfur dioxide exceeds the permissible limit - warns Haračić.

- Two companies specializing in burning tires are currently operating in the Lukavac area, but they are doing so without valid permits. Now, a third company has also submitted a request to obtain an environmental permit, and it wants to engage in the incineration of hazardous grit waste. 

Haračić has requested the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism to urgently suspend the issuance of environmental permits in the Lukavac area to all legal entities that have not complied with even the minimum environmental standards. Haračić demands that the authorities protect the citizens of this municipality in the Tuzla Canton at least to some extent, writes Patria.
