Chaos at the border: Slovenians erect wire fence, 1,500 people waiting in the rain, emergency services intervene

More than 1,500 people are still waiting to enter Slovenia, but the police are only letting women and children through. People are freezing and hypothermic, and emergency services had to intervene several times, reports the Patria News Agency.

According to the BBC, about 50 buses with more than a thousand people are waiting at the border with Croatia on the Serbian side. Many are forced to wait in the cold and rain overnight, freezing, exhausted, and terrified. 

A train from Tovarnik with about 1,800 people arrived in Čakovec half an hour after midnight. Although the Croatian police could not agree with their Slovenian counterparts on acceptance, the train continued towards Slovenia shortly before two o'clock and was in Trnovec, 200 meters from the border, at 2:10 AM. Obstacles were placed on the railway tracks at Središče ob Dravi, and the refugees released from the train were met by Slovenian riot police with dogs and a newly erected wire fence, HRT reports.

Refugees were seeking passage through the fence to enter Slovenia, and there were many women with children. Some tried to cross the stream. The Slovenians redirected them to the official crossing, but they were not allowed through there either. The Središče ob Dravi border crossing is closed to all traffic. Most of the refugees, those who did not manage to find a hole in the fence and cross to the Slovenian side, were still in the mud, in the rain and cold at the entrance to Slovenia at 5:30 AM, writes Index.
