Hadžibajrić visited Goran Čengić's grave on the Day of the Righteous

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The Mayor of the Old Town Municipality, Mr. Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, laid flowers on Goran Čengić's grave at Bare City Cemetery, thus marking the International Day of the Righteous on March 6.

This is the seventh year that the Association "Friends of the City of Sarajevo" has been marking the Day of the Righteous in this manner. Every year, the Old Town Municipality supports the event, thus reminding the public that civic courage, embodied in the name of Goran Čengić, must be put into practice in everyday circumstances and life situations. Goran Čengić, a humanist and prominent pre-war athlete, lost his life on June 14, 1992, due to a heroic attempt to save his neighbor Husnija Ćerimagić from the criminal Veselin Vlahović Batko, known as the "monster from Grbavica," in the Sarajevo settlement of Grbavica. Both Goran and Husnija were then taken to Trebević and liquidated. The commemoration of this day began yesterday with a manifestation at the First Gymnasium, the school once attended by the righteous Goran Čengić, which was also attended by Mayor Hadžibajrić.

In honor of the former student of the First Gymnasium, poems were recited, and a message was sent to the competent institutions that a certain location in Sarajevo must bear the name of this brave man.

The Mayor of the Old Town Municipality, Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, said that he gladly supports this commemoration.

"The civic courage that Goran Čengić showed in the most difficult moments of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina is truly incredible and worthy of all respect. I see no obstacle for a place or memorial in the Old Town to bear Goran's name and remind us of his heroic act. Goran deserved it!" Hadžibajrić said.
