Gutić: Monitoring in mines is necessary

A terrible mining accident in the RMU Zenica Raspotočje mine has, for who knows what time, sparked a public outcry about the conditions our miners work in, writes the Patria News Agency. We remind you that five miners lost their lives, and 29 were trapped 500 meters underground for a full 20 hours.

Kemal Gutić, Dean of the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering in Tuzla, told the media that the mine management should address the safety aspect.

- It is necessary to switch to flexible systems to reduce accidents. Instruments exist and are known to the management. Changes must be continuously monitored. If this problem is to be solved, one should look at a solution in a French iron mine. Everything can be resolved very quickly. It's not that the mine management does not accept expert opinion; they are working with a traditional model and trying to overcome some issues. Safety is one thing, and monitoring is another, and attention must be paid to it. Rock bursts are a phenomenon known since 1926 - Gutić said.
