City Council Postpones Debate on February 1 as Sarajevo's Founding Day to One of the Upcoming Sessions

(Patria) - The Sarajevo City Council voted today to postpone the debate on marking February 1 as Sarajevo's founding day to one of the upcoming sessions of the City Council.

This decision was supported by 21 councilors who attended the session, and the vote was preceded by a heated debate on this proposal. Incidentally, the City Council has 28 councilors.

Jasmin Ademović, Chairman of the Sarajevo City Council, and Vedad Deljković, a city councilor, are the proponents of this initiative. Ademović explained at today's session that this idea was conceived in the 1960s and has been intensively discussed for years.

"April 6 is too significant a date for anyone to tamper with it. My vote will never be raised against that date," he stated.

He also noted that "one date cannot diminish another" and that the aim was, among other things, to draw tourists' attention to this date, emphasizing that the goal was not to change the city's date.

He reiterated that April 5 and 6 are deeply etched in history, but that one should also look deep into the past and pay attention to this date.

Predrag Puharić, Mayor of Sarajevo, also addressed the councilors, saying that the dedication regarding this date is appreciated.

"Adding another date could diminish April 6. My proposal is to establish a Sarajevo History Day," Puharić emphasized.

This would involve a seven-day commemoration of all significant events related to the history of the Bosnian capital, which, in his opinion, would prevent further divisions.

Ademović immediately responded, saying he supports such a proposal, which could be considered at one of the upcoming sessions.

Councilor Seid Škaljić pointed out that this very institution is the right place for a debate on February 1, as well as April 6.

"We must commemorate such historical moments, like April 6. We from Stari Grad know very well what it means to stand up and fight," said Škaljić.
