(Patria) - On this day, we remember one of the most difficult periods in the history of our city – the beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo, the longest siege of a capital city
ever.
Sarajevo lived under siege for 1,425 days, without basic living conditions, but with incredible strength, dignity, and resistance, our fellow citizens showed what it means to love their city and (defend) it.
The beginning of the siege was marked by the death of the first Sarajevo victims, Suada Dilberović and Olga Sučić, remembered for their courage and determination to stop the evil that loomed over their city in peaceful demonstrations on April 5, 1992, together with their fellow citizens.

The Mayor of Sarajevo, Samir Avdić, along with deputies Mirela Džehverović and Predrag Puharić, and the President of the City Council, Alen Girt, with deputy Svjetlana Šošić, paid tribute and laid flowers at the memorial plaque on Suada and Olga Bridge in memory of our heroines.
City officials also laid flowers at the "Dobrinjska barikada" memorial and in the courtyard of the Vraca Police Academy, where the memory of Samir Mišić, the first victim of the attack on the then police school, was honored.

Mayor Avdić also laid flowers at the "Bosnian Special Forces" monument with a message to permanently remember the honorable struggle and sacrifice of 80 members and one female member of the Special Unit of the MUP of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the "Bosna" Police Detachment, in the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, next to the "Bosnian Special Forces" memorial in the park near the Second Gymnasium, the 34th anniversary of the formation of the special unit of the MUP of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the "Bosna" Police Detachment, was also marked.

Mayor Samir Avdić said on this occasion that it is our duty to preserve the truth, nurture the culture of remembrance, and teach future generations about the importance of peace, tolerance, and unity.
"Sarajevo remembers, but even more decisively – Sarajevo lives its freedom and moves forward," Avdić stated.
