Mayor Lugavić: A great tragedy, but a swift reaction saved many lives, and I thank everyone

(Patria) - Mayor of Tuzla Zijad Lugavić addressed the public after an emergency meeting held due to a fire that broke out in the Retirement Home, in which 11 people died and more than 30 were injured.

He said that the fire was reported at 20:45, and firefighters were the first to arrive at the scene.

"A great tragedy, a great tragedy. And it is difficult to talk about it. 11 lives were lost, over 30 were admitted to the University Clinical Centre and Slavinovići. A large number received assistance at the emergency medical service on Gradina, mostly due to the effects of poisoning. I wish to express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. It is truly difficult to speak. I have given many, many interviews, but the sorrow is immense, immense," said Lugavić.

He especially thanked the firefighting teams, as well as everyone who provided assistance in extinguishing the fire.

"So it was a major operation with a swift, professional, and quality response to such an incident. I can say with certainty that a large number of lives were saved. Over 60 people had to be evacuated from the 6th and 7th floors. You had to be there to see how people put the lives of others before their own. Believe me, only great people, people with big hearts, can do that, and for that I thank them greatly," said the Mayor of Tuzla.

He announced that a huge amount of work lies ahead and that working groups will be formed to assess the actual situation on the ground.

"We must see how habitable the home is for the residents. The damage must be assessed, a team of experts must be established to create a project for the revitalisation of the facility and its restoration to a habitable condition. We also agreed on psychological support for both the residents and their family members," said Lugavić.

He confirmed that the director of the Home, Mirsad Bakalović, submitted his resignation, but could not provide any further comment.
