Citizens demand accountability for the death of little girl Džena, several requests submitted

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Citizens of Sarajevo gathered today in front of the Ministry of Health of Sarajevo Canton, i.e. the Government of Sarajevo Canton, to present their demands regarding the disclosure of all circumstances that led to the tragic death of two-and-a-half-year-old girl Džena Gadžun from Kakanj.

One of the organizers of the gathering, Alen Alić, said they are demanding the urgent formation of a commission to define the criminal responsibility of doctors from three healthcare institutions. The second demand is the urgent engagement of the inspection, and the temporary suspension of operations of the healthcare institution PZU Halimić and the private dental practice "Bejtović" until the criminal responsibility is defined and the work permits of individuals in the mentioned healthcare institutions are revoked. They also demand changes to the legal procedures for providing healthcare services in Sarajevo Canton.

They believe that 15 days are sufficient for fulfilling their demands, otherwise they will call citizens to protests again.

"This is our obligation because a murder was committed in Sarajevo," said Alić.

The girl was operated on November 8 at the private healthcare practice Bejtović/Rožajac, where complications occurred during the surgical procedure performed by Dr. Nina Jovanović, who also works at PZU Halimić. Dr. Jovanović did not have a license to work in Sarajevo Canton. The inspection in health supervision identified a series of irregularities related to surgical procedures, unverified equipment, and non-compliance with legal provisions. It was determined that the anesthesia machine used during the girl's operation was never legally verified after purchase.

An additional problem is the performance of the operation under general anesthesia, which is not allowed by law for private institutions.
