Citizens demand that Sarajevo also be marked in remembrance of the genocide on July 11

Residents of Sarajevo demand that on July 11, the city have more symbols indicating that one of the greatest crimes in Europe after World War II occurred in Srebrenica on that day, a survey conducted by reporters of the Bosnian news agency Patria on the streets of Sarajevo showed.

Citizens included in this survey said that on July 11, flags at half-mast should be on all public buildings in the city, more points where the Srebrenica Flower will be distributed or sold, and more other events that will point to one of the most painful moments in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Sarajevo resident Alija Hodžić said that this is a special day for him, during which he prays more intensely for the killed Bosniaks. But July 11 is special for him only because he wants it to be that way. Otherwise, the atmosphere in Sarajevo itself, he says, does not remind him enough that one of the most horrific genocides is being commemorated in the east of the country.

- People in Sarajevo talk about Srebrenica, but it is quite symbolic. The media lead them to it. If it weren't for the media, there wouldn't be as much talk, because there are few things on the streets themselves that remind us of the evil that our compatriots suffered from '92 onwards – says Hodžić.

Amila, a Sarajevo resident, is also not satisfied with the way the capital of our country marks the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. Her opinion is that the entire city, even a few days before July 11, should start publicly talking about Srebrenica and what happened there from 1992 to 1995.

- Since this morning, I have been trying to get a Srebrenica Flower, but I couldn't find one anywhere to buy. I am sorry about that – says Amila.

Edin Ramić and his friend Mirza Solak, although only 19 years old, said that they do not see anything in the city that would indicate that today marks the anniversary of the genocide of Bosniaks from Srebrenica and surrounding areas, but that thanks to the media, since this morning they have been thinking about the genocide and that because of it they have an indescribable nausea in their stomachs.

- Maybe it is too much for us young people that since this morning, or since yesterday, we have not been able to read anything on Sarajevo portals except topics about Srebrenica, but I actually realized that it must be so and that it is the only way for people not to forget the evil that befell our country – said Ramić.
