City of Sarajevo asks OHR to remove Ratko Mladić memorial plaque in Novo Sarajevo

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - At today's session of the Sarajevo City Council, an initiative by councilor Alma Čengić was adopted with 20 votes IN FAVOR, requesting the Office of the High Representative to order the removal of a memorial plaque to convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić at the entrance to the Novo Sarajevo municipality area.

Councilor Alma Čengić of the Party of Democratic Action, citing the High Representative's Decision No. 26/21 which enacted the Law on Amendments to the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina banning the erection of monuments and memorials to persons finally convicted of genocide, together with other councilors sent a clear message that the City of Sarajevo will not allow the existence of a monument to a criminal who destroyed it for four years and caused the greatest crime in Europe since World War II.

- Given the lack of possibilities for direct intervention, this initiative represents an appeal to the Office of the High Representative to ensure the implementation of the norm it enacted. The City of Sarajevo has zero tolerance for convicted war criminals - emphasized councilor Čengić.
