South Australia ablaze, 40,000 people at risk

Strong bushfires threatened homes in the Adelaide area of South Australia on Saturday, with five houses already destroyed, and authorities in the country warned of one of the worst climate episodes in the region after the catastrophic fires of 1983, reports the Patria News Agency.

The Adelaide Hills, famous for wine production, northeast of the city, are facing an “incredibly dangerous fire accompanied by strong winds and high temperatures”, which is difficult to fight.

The zone is inhabited by about 40,000 people, whom local authorities have urged to leave their homes as soon as possible.

– We are currently facing an extremely dangerous fire – said South Australia Fire Chief Greg Nettleton. Five houses have been burned, and the numbers could be worse given the 110 km/h winds – Australian media report.
