Anniversary of the birth of Mak Dizdar: Here one dies to live

Mehmedalija Mak Dizdar, one of the greatest Bosnian-Herzegovinian poets, was born on 17 October 1917 in Stolac. His works Kameni spavač and Modra rijeka are among the most significant Bosnian-Herzegovinian poetry collections of the last century. He composed an image of a world that no longer exists, built on the foundation of old Bosnian texts, reports the Patria news agency.

He completed primary school in Stolac, after which he went to Sarajevo. He began writing for the newspaper and magazine Gajret, edited by his older brother Hamid. After the war, which he partly spent in hiding, he remained connected to journalism as an editor of the newspaper Oslobođenje, and then professionally devoted himself to literature, editing the magazine Život.

He stayed in Sarajevo until his death. He died on 14 July 1971.
