(Patria) - On this day in 1992, members of the Army of Republika Srpska committed one of the most horrific crimes during the siege of Sarajevo. It was the massacre in Vase Miskina Street, today's Ferhadija.
Serbian forces fired three mortar shells from the direction of Borija, killing 26 and wounding 108 citizens of Sarajevo.
The day before the massacre, Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev visited Sarajevo, and among other things, a ceasefire was agreed upon. In accordance with this agreement, a ceasefire was to come into effect on May 27, 1992, at 6 AM, and the citizens of Sarajevo were "encouraged" to stand in line for bread, which was delivered to a store in Vase Miskina Street around 9 AM, and dairy products were soon delivered nearby. While bread was being distributed, at 9:55 AM, shells were fired at this location.
This was the first mass killing of citizens in besieged Sarajevo during the aggression from 1992 to 1995. The massacre in Vase Miskina Street is one of 230 instances of mass killing of civilians during the siege of Sarajevo. No one has been prosecuted for this crime.
Family members, survivors, member of the Presidency of BiH Željko Komšić, and numerous delegations laid flowers at the site of the massacre today and paid tribute to all those killed.
32 years ago, the following were killed: Nedžad Abdija, Ismet Ašćerić, Ruždija Bektešević, Snježana Biloš, Predrag Bogdanović, Vladimir Bogunović, Vasva Čengić, Gordana Čeklić, Mirsad Fazlagić, Emina Karamustafić, Mediha Omerović, Bahrija Pilav, Mila Ruždić, Mile Ružić, Hatidža Salić, Galib Sinotić, Abdulah Sarajlić, Sulejman Sarajlić, Sreten Stamenović, Srećko Šiklić, Božica Trajeri-Pataki, Vlatko Tanacković, Srećko Tanasković, Tamara Vejzagić-Kostić, Jusuf Vladović, and Izudin Zukić.
