Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi officially invited German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande to a mini-summit on Monday on the symbolically important island of Ventotene to discuss the European Union after Brexit, reports the news agency Patria.
Renzi will welcome the German Chancellor and the French President on Monday in Naples before the meeting of the three leaders on the island of Ventotene between Rome and Naples, the statement from the Italian government specifies.
Renzi chose this island, which was a prison for one of the founders of Europe, to emphasize the need for a new beginning for the European Union after Brexit - the decision of the British to leave the EU, writes Hina.
Their meeting on the island of Ventotene will take place three weeks before the European summit on September 16 in Bratislava, which is being announced as crucial for the future of Europe.
