Voting on Sunday is just the first step on the path to a better BiH

A new blog by the Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in BiH, Nicholas M. Hill, was published today on the official website of the American Embassy in BiH. The BiH news agency Patria is transmitting it in its entirety. 

-Over the past few weeks, I have tried to use this space to encourage dialogue among voters, during which we have had the opportunity to hear what troubles the citizens of this country. Regardless of whether we had anything to do with it or not, we are glad that, in these final days before the elections, in cafes and barbershops, among taxi drivers, academics, mechanics, all citizens alike, there are serious discussions about problems directly related to their lives.  Even Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, posted on her Twitter profile today, "I'm following a great debate about real issues at #izboriBiH 2014” …”. People all over the world are following the situation, waiting to see what will happen here on Sunday.  

To be clear, although the whole world is watching what is happening, the choice is yours and yours alone, no one else's. I deeply respect the people of this country and would not even think of suggesting who would be the best leader for BiH. Our only goal is to encourage each of you to choose – to acknowledge your own responsibility to decide who will represent you for the next four years. If you do not do so, you should not complain later about the decisions of leaders whose priorities are not the same as yours.

But your role does not end the moment you cast your ballot in the ballot box this weekend. The citizens of this country cannot go home, watch the results on TV, and claim they have done all they could. As soon as the new government is formed (and we all hope it will happen quickly), your, sometimes difficult, job of holding politicians accountable for the promises they made begins—accountability for visible, significant improvements in your daily lives. You already have enough resources at your disposal to continue to be involved in civil society and the political process. Professional, unbiased media can be one of them. They should be your allies in the fight for transparency and accountability. Reward serious, objective journalists with your time and attention.

Then, show support for dedicated, grassroot organizations in this country that are fighting to strengthen civil society and help you hold leaders accountable by speaking with one voice, representing the interests of citizens. They work hard to ensure the transparency that is desperately needed by you and everyone who wants this country to succeed. Visit their websites, learn more about their initiatives, and let political leaders know that you listen to what credible NGOs have to say.

The democratic process can be frustrating, but I urge you to continue to participate in it to ensure the future of this country for you and your children. Your vote is crucial, like an advance payment for a long-term investment that requires patience and constant attention, and the potential dividends are the security, stability, and economic prosperity that all citizens of this country deserve. Voting on Sunday is just the first step on the path to a better BiH.
