UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to visit Srebrenica

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today spoke at a press conference about his plans for the current year 2020, and in response to a question from Erol Avdović, a Bosnian journalist at the UN, said that he will come this year to mark the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. In the context of your initiative on hate speech, will you visit Srebrenica?

"Yes, I am going. I think it is important to go to show the need for Srebrenica never to happen again. We view developments in BiH with concern and believe we must move towards reconciliation and fight against hate speech. We are in contact with BiH authorities and think that BiH needs great help to overcome dysfunctionality, which is growing due to politics. At the same time, we are working with all countries in the region and I noticed that the High Representative also said this is his top priority, and I think the international community must also have a sense for the countries of the region in order to move positively towards EU integration processes," said Guterres, as reported by N1.

A message to genocide deniers? Is the introduction of a new law a measure?

"There was a Special Court that worked on these cases, other countries do not accept the verdicts and we are far from a solid legal system, but it needs to be supported so that cases of crimes against humanity and genocide can be worked on transparently so that they do not go unpunished," said Guterres.
