Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque was the first in the world to receive electric lighting in 1898.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo, due to its size and appeal, is one of the most significant monuments of Islamic sacral architecture in the Balkans, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Built in 1530, the mosque is an endowment of Gazi Husrev-beg, the ruler of the Bosnian Sanjak. It was designed by Ajem Esir Ali from Tabriz, one of the greatest architects of Istanbul, and built by Dubrovnik masters.

In the shadow of the mosque and centuries-old linden trees are two turbets, where Gazi Husrev-beg and his captive and later friend, the Dalmatian Murad-beg Tardić, were buried in 1541. Near the mosque are a clock tower and a madrasa.

In the 16th century, when it was built, Beg's Mosque represented a structure of exceptional importance for the urban development of Sarajevo and is one of the most significant buildings from the rich legacy of Gazi Husrev-beg. It is the first mosque in the world to receive electric lighting in 1898.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, like most others in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was damaged during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Serbian aggressor.

It was renovated again on July 6, 1998, with a monetary donation from the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, writes NAP.
