Gatti Santana: Mechanism continues to provide key evidence in achieving justice

(Patria) - Graciela Gatti Santana, President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, addressed the commemoration in Srebrenica.

"With this key event, emotions come to the surface. These are sad moments for the survivors and for the families of the victims, physical and emotional scars are permanent reminders. The forced displacement of women and girls and the commission of other crimes, the separation of men. Three decades later, not all victims have been found. Some suspects remain fugitives from justice, and judicially established facts about Srebrenica are being denied. This deepens national divisions.

Although the Hague Tribunal and the Mechanism have completed their task, the Mechanism remains open to addressing issues within its mandate and continues to provide key evidence in achieving justice.

Today is a moment of remembrance and paying tribute to the victims and survivors because you have built a new community and relentlessly seek truth and justice. We also pay tribute to the witnesses, over 1,000 of them in cases related to Srebrenica.

I encourage domestic authorities to use the judgments of the Hague Tribunal to combat denial and prevent conflict," said Gatti Santana.
