(Patria) - Tyson Fury won the world heavyweight championship title after defeating defending champion Deontay Wilder by technical knockout in the seventh round in Las Vegas.
The Briton dominated the entire fight, Wilder was counted twice, and the match was eventually stopped after a towel was thrown into the ring from his corner. For the first time in the history of the heavyweight division, a match between two previously undefeated boxers ended in this manner.
Besides earning a lot of money (at least $25 million each), their match today broke the previous record set by Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield back in 1997.
The legendary fight in which Tyson bit off a piece of Holyfield's ear, leading to his disqualification, grossed $16.86 million from ticket sales, and that record was broken today.
In the same arena, the MGM Grand hotel, Fury and Wilder were watched by 15,816 spectators, and tickets were sold for a total of $16.92 million, which is a new record.
