FUCZ on standby, vigilance urged from others: New precipitation, sub-zero temperatures, high risk of floods expected

(Patria) - According to the latest information from the competent institutions of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, following snowfall and snowmelt in higher areas, a slight increase in river water levels is recorded, and there is a further risk of overflow, flash floods, flooding of lower areas, and possible landslides in the areas of Sarajevo Canton, Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, Bosniak-Podrinje Canton, Una-Sana Canton, and Posavina Canton.

The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute has issued a yellow warning for the central, eastern, and northern parts of Bosnia. Minimum air temperatures will range from -14 to -10 °C. According to the FHMZ forecast, snow is expected in most of the country on Saturday, January 10, 2026, while rain will fall in the south.

In the lowlands, freezing rain may occur in the morning. More precipitation is expected in the central and eastern areas (5-15 cm of new snow), and up to 20 cm in the mountains.

Due to low temperatures and expected precipitation, the FUCZ appeals to cantonal and municipal civil protection services to continuously monitor the most endangered areas and, if necessary, immediately activate protection and rescue forces, in accordance with plans and responsibilities, to protect people and property.

Information from BIHAMK indicates that road conditions are difficult, especially in the western and mountainous regions of BiH. Snowfall further complicates traffic in urban areas.

The Federal Civil Protection Administration appeals to employers and public institutions to fulfill their legal obligations in such weather conditions and contribute to the smooth movement and safety of citizens.

The Federal Civil Protection Administration also continuously monitors the situation through the Federal Operational Center, collects information, assesses the situation and the need for assistance in terms of resources and equipment. It is in constant communication with cantonal and municipal civil protection services to provide the most effective response in case of the need for operational forces.

Federal specialized civil protection units remain on standby for rapid response.
