French court orders lifting of burkini ban

French mayors do not have the right to ban the wearing of burkinis, concluded the State Court of France on Friday, adding that the suspension of the earlier regulation has already taken effect.

The highest court of this country expects the ban on wearing burkinis, a special swimsuit for women of Islamic faith, to be lifted by the end of the day in all cities that have introduced a ban at all.

The law specifically applies to Villeneuve-Loubet, near Nice, and a total of 15 cities along the coast banned the wearing of burkinis earlier this summer.

Officials justified the ban on wearing burkinis with the "growing risk of terrorist attacks", while human rights activists warned that banning burkinis is illegal and pushes society further into Islamophobia.
