France removes the word 'race' from the Constitution

PARIS, (Patria) - The French Parliament Committee today unanimously decided to remove the word “race” from the first article of the Constitution and to prohibit “discrimination based on sex”, world agencies report.

If these amendments pass in the plenary session when the constitutional amendment is considered, the sentence will read:

- France ensures the equality of all citizens before the law, without distinction based on sex, origin, or religion”, while currently it states “distinction based on origin, race, or religion”.

All parliamentary groups called for the removal of the word “race” from the Constitution, considering that this word, introduced into the Constitution in 1946 to reject racist theories after the Nazi period, can be misunderstood today, as well as because it is unfounded since there are no true differences among people based on race.

Some deputies believe that abolishing this word will not weaken the available legal remedies in the fight against racism.
