A group of Sarajevo mountaineers spent the weekend in the Montenegrin national park Durmitor, which is considered one of the most beautiful natural mountain landscapes of the Western Balkans.

Beautiful photos were provided to the Patria news agency by the Association for the Support and Development of Sports Tourism “Avantur“.

Durmitor is a mountain and national park in Montenegro. It is believed that the name Durmitor originates from Celtic words meaning "mountain full of water.”

The landscapes of Durmitor, a rare and authentic work of nature in its beauty and intactness, were declared a national park in 1952. Located in northwestern Montenegro, the park encompasses the main massif of Durmitor with the canyons of Tara, Draga, and Sušica, and the upper part of the Komarnica canyon valley, covering an area of 39,000 hectares.

All the splendor of the natural beauties, ambient, and cultural values of Durmitor and the Tara River led to the Durmitor National Park being included in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, by the decision of the International Committee for World Cultural and Natural Heritage, in Paris in 1980, while the Tara River and its canyon valley were included in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program in 1977 as world biosphere reserves (area of 32,000 ha).

With its rich flora and fauna, complex ecosystems, and over 1,300 species of plants, Durmitor represents an exceptional natural value and a constant inspiration for scientists and nature lovers.

The Tara River and its tributaries are home to a large number of salmon, and in the forests, one can find: brown bears, wolves, wild boars, wildcats, chamois, several species of eagles, grouse, and partridges.
