File: Our commitment to BiH is unshaken

European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan File stated today in Sarajevo after talks with state Prime Minister Vjekoslav Bevanda and entity prime ministers that the European Union remains committed to BiH's path towards membership in the Union. 

- Our commitment is unshaken - File said, even after yesterday's multi-hour talks with political leaders failed to produce an agreement on the implementation of the Sejdić-Finci ruling.

He expressed disappointment with last night's failed negotiations, stating that some tried to be constructive, while others attempted to introduce other topics unrelated to the ruling.

- This failure does not mean the end of our engagement, but there may be consequences for not fulfilling this ruling. BiH institutions must meet their international obligations. The solution to the ruling must be in building a bridge between Dayton and Brussels. Only after crossing that bridge can progress be expected. The more you work and move closer to the EU, the more we will help you. This is the key that will enable passage to the EU - File said.

File emphasized that representatives of the Council of Europe and the Venice Commission, as well as the USA, were present at the meetings with the leaders.

File stressed that the political system must be more accountable to the citizens of BiH and ensure that the justified demands of the citizens are met. 

File also spoke today about the need to establish a coordination mechanism. As File emphasized, all current and future IPA funds planned for BiH will be tied to the implementation of necessary reforms. Special emphasis was placed on a more effective fight against corruption.

- Without this mechanism and political will, there will be no results. During the talks with the prime ministers, the importance of resolving the basic economic and social problems of the citizens was highlighted. The involvement of civil society is good because it influences politicians. We will help you so that the system that exists in BiH also reflects EU values. The main goal is to enable just and fair elections and for politicians to take responsibility - File said, among other things. Immediately after the meeting, File headed to Sarajevo Airport.
