European Parliament condemns secessionist rhetoric from RS, calls for stronger fight against crime and corruption, stagnation in reforms

(Patria) - The European Parliament today adopted a report reiterating strong support for the European path of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stressing that the accession process must be merit-based and based on the Copenhagen criteria, with full respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of the country.

The report, among other things, condemns secessionist rhetoric, particularly from the Republika Srpska, and calls on the European Union to respond with concrete measures, including targeted sanctions.

Welcoming the European Council's decision to open accession negotiations with BiH in the context of the changed geopolitical environment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, MEPs acknowledge key reforms but express concern over the stagnation in progress and weak implementation.

The report calls for the implementation of necessary constitutional and electoral reforms, as well as the strengthening of democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption and organised crime.

MEPs strongly condemn divisive rhetoric and secessionist policies, particularly those promoted by Milorad Dodik and the leadership of the Republika Srpska, and call on the EU to take decisive measures, including targeted sanctions, to counter destabilising forces that threaten the country's stability and European security.

The report also expresses concern over malign foreign influences and disinformation campaigns by foreign actors, especially Russia and China, which undermine public trust in the EU.

European Parliament rapporteur Ondřej Kolář (EPP, Czech Republic) stated that "the future of the Balkans belongs to Europe, not under Russian domination."

– Bosnia and Herzegovina, immediately after Ukraine, is in the most difficult situation in Europe. We must find an effective way to help it on the path to full integration into Western structures. Events in BiH remind us daily how fragile peace, stability and development are, and that we must not relent – because otherwise, we could again face war and destruction – warned Kolář, as announced by the European Parliament.

The report was adopted with 459 votes in favour, 130 against, and 63 abstentions.
