EU does not give up on saving the nuclear deal with Iran

(Patria) - EU foreign ministers will discuss the 'Iranian crisis' at an extraordinary meeting on Friday after US President Trump called on allies to withdraw from the nuclear deal with Iran.

High-ranking EU officials claim they will 'do everything' to maintain the so-called nuclear deal, whose main purpose is to prevent Iran from developing atomic weapons.

Let us recall that after the assassination of General Soleimani, Iran announced that it would cease to comply with the agreement regarding the limits of uranium enrichment, as well as the number of centrifuges it can use for this purpose – a move that Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called 'corrective', which can therefore be withdrawn.

In the announced retaliation for the assassination, Iran targeted military bases in Iraq where US troops are located with ballistic missiles. The attack passed without casualties, but caused material damage.

European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen announced that EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell will continue to work with other relevant participants to save the agreement, despite the US withdrawal and urging others to do the same.

- The use of weapons must stop immediately and dialogue must be given space. We are called upon to do everything in our power to revive the negotiations. There is never enough of that, von der Leyen emphasized.

Borrell invited Zarif to Brussels for talks, but a date has not yet been set due to a full diplomatic schedule, writes Euronews.
