(Patria) – The beginning of March also marked the beginning of negotiations between Great Britain and the EU regarding post-Brexit relations.
The differences in views that led to Brexit are expected to persist, and it is now certain that the negotiations will turn into a 'thorny path' that may not even lead to the goal.
The existence of 'very serious differences' regarding the vision for the future of these two sides was also confirmed by the chief Brexit negotiator for the EU, Michel Barnier.
After the first round of negotiations, he stated that there are disagreements regarding fair competition, law enforcement cooperation, and fishing.
Barnier explained that regarding competition, London claims to aspire to 'high standards', but 'does not want to turn commitments into a common agreement'.
As for the cooperation of former partners in the field of law enforcement, Barnier revealed that Great Britain 'does not want to formally commit to the continued application of the European Convention, nor do they want the European Court of Justice to play a full role in interpreting European law'.
Barnier explained that one of the consequences for cooperation would be the inability to share data such as DNA.
- For us, this is a condition without which we cannot proceed... If Great Britain does not change its stance, it will directly and concretely affect the level of ambition related to our cooperation, warned the chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.
