Escobar and Murphy visit the Memorial Center in Potočari

(Patria) - The US Special Envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, is visiting Srebrenica today as part of an official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Together with the US Ambassador Michael Murphy, he visited the Memorial Center in Potočari, where he met with director Emir Suljagić, writes RSE.

The Memorial Center in Potočari was established in 2000 as a place of remembrance for the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, committed in July 1995 by the Army of Republika Srpska.

According to verdicts by international and BiH courts, more than 8,000 Bosniaks were killed in the Srebrenica genocide.

Around 50 individuals have been convicted so far for the genocide and crimes in Srebrenica, receiving over 700 years in prison.

On the first day of his visit to BiH, Escobar spoke in Sarajevo today with the BiH Minister of Defense Zukan Helez, discussing, among other things, the war in Ukraine, BiH's Euro-Atlantic path, and BiH's defense cooperation with the US.

Escobar is visiting BiH to discuss the current political situation with BiH officials in light of the escalation of attacks on the Dayton Peace Agreement, the constitutional order, and the state of BiH, the US Embassy announced earlier.
