BRUSSELS, (Patria) - The European Parliament, with 384 votes in favour, 153 against, and 12 abstentions, has adopted a resolution abolishing summer and winter time.
- The citizens' initiative has shown that the public is concerned about summer and winter time, i.e., changing the clock twice a year, in March and October. Numerous studies conducted have not led to a unified conclusion on this issue, but they have indicated that changing the clock may have negative consequences for people's health - the European Parliament announced.
Members of Parliament have called on the European Commission to adopt a directive on this matter.
The current summer and winter time in EU countries has been in effect since 2001, when the relevant directive was adopted, ensuring the harmonisation of times and dates for the start and end of summer time throughout the EU.
What is not specified in the Parliament's resolution is whether the current winter or summer time would be used in the future.
If the current winter time is used, it means that at the end of June and the beginning of July, the sun will rise around four in the morning and set around 8 PM. The first signs of daylight, i.e., dawn, would appear around three in the morning, and complete darkness would fall by 8:30 PM.
If summer time is retained, daylight should be available until 5 PM in December, but it would only start to get light after 8 AM.
