Eli Tauber on Čović's tribute to Holocaust victims: Let him first abolish streets named after Ustasha ideologues

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - As a warning to all - so that it never happens again, HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović wrote on Twitter, along with a photo of Zagreb Cathedral which marked January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, with messages of peace.

“In the company of the Mayor of Zagreb, Milan Bandić, and Monsignor Zlatko Koren in front of Zagreb Cathedral. It bears a strong message of remembrance of the innocent human victims of Nazi ideology and regime. As a warning to all - so that it never happens again,” Čović wrote.

Historian Eli Tauber, however, believes that such messages from the HDZ president are immoral, meaning that before marking the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it was necessary to “clean up some things in his own house.”

“A criminal like Jure Francetić, an Ustasha butcher, who killed so many Serbs and Jews, cannot have his honorary place or honorary street,” Dr. Tauber told the Patria agency, referring to a street in Mostar named after this member of the Ustasha movement, responsible for the persecution and massacre of Serbs and Jews in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina during World War II.

“This is incompatible with reason, with morality,” said Dr. Tauber.

In the western part of Mostar, a street is named after Mile Budak, also a member of the Ustasha movement. It is located less than a kilometer from the headquarters of HDZ Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Čović's central office is located.

“Unfortunately, left-wing parties, or centrist parties, have done nothing to prevent streets from being named after such ideologues and similar ones, whom we have today throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Tauber.

“The whole world is fighting to destroy everything related to fascism, and we are allowing people who, by their moral qualities, should have been completely erased as if they never existed, to enter through the back door,” concluded Dr. Tauber.
