Exhumation near Srebrenica: Remains of at least two genocide victims found

SREBRENICA, (Patria) - Incomplete remains of at least two victims of the past war were exhumed yesterday at the Kazani site, Srebrenica municipality. It is assumed that they are victims of Bosniak ethnicity who were killed in 1995 in the Srebrenica area. The remains of the victims were found in waste material beneath the local cemetery, i.e., between the road and the nearby river at this site.

Investigators from the Institute for Missing Persons of BiH had worked at this site earlier, specifically in 2004, but no remains were found. Subsequently, waste
material from houses, or so-called rubble, was brought to this location, and skeletal parts were found in it. After the exhumation, the remains of the victims were transported to the Memorial Center in Tuzla, where forensic and criminal-technical processing and extraction of bone samples for DNA analysis will be carried out to determine the identity of the victims.

The exhumation was conducted under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH, by order of the Court of BiH. Simultaneously, at local cemeteries in the areas of Gornja Kalesija and Zvornik, a process of re-exhumation and reassociation of remains for 46 victims has begun. Under the supervision of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH and with the consent of the families, 46 graves will be opened during this week to add subsequently found remains to previously buried victims.
