Durmisevic: Bosnian language is ideal for haiku poems

World Poetry Day is celebrated on March 21. This was an occasion for a conversation with Smail Durmisevic, one of the hundred haiku poets of Europe. Although a doctor by profession, Smail Durmisevic discovered this form of poetry writing five or six years ago. From then until now, he has written four books of haiku poetry. He reveals to the Patria news agency that the translation of his poetry into English has opened all doors for him.

- At the beginning of March, I became a member of the World Haiku Association (WHA) based in Tokyo. My latest collection of poems, "The Scent of the Wild Rose," will be presented in April at the annual seminar of the World Haiku Association in Tokyo. The promoter will be WHA Director Ban'ya Natsuishi and a professor of haiku and comparative cultural studies at Meiji University in Tokyo - states Durmisevic.

Although Durmisevic will not have the opportunity to travel to Tokyo, as he says, Professor Natsuishi will be his extended arm. Haiku poetry is a specific form of writing, but the human state of mind is also extremely important.

- People rich in spirit, people who feel, observe, who have sympathy or empathy for others can write haiku. Nature is placed at the center. The essence of haiku poetry is the haiku moment and the haiku experience. These two things are the focus. It is living matter, it is constantly developing. The form of writing is 5-7-5 syllables in classical haiku poetry. When my poetry is translated into English, this meter is lost, so the Bosnian language is extremely suitable for this meter - says Durmisevic.

Besides poetry, Smail also writes other short forms, such as lyrics - short broken verses, short stories, humorous or satirical pieces, and aphorisms, which is the shortest form.
