Dubai: Edin Gačanin arrested, Dutch prosecution seeking his extradition

(Patria) - At the request of the Dutch Public Prosecution Service, convicted drug dealer Edin Gačanin, leader of the "Tito i Dino" cartel, has been arrested in Dubai.

Dutch portal ad.nl reminds that the criminal from Breda was also arrested in Dubai in 2022, but was released for reasons that were never clarified.

The Dutch Bosnian is considered one of the biggest drug dealers in the world. The Dutch prosecution has now requested his extradition.

Edin Gačanin was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but grew up in the Dutch city of Breda. However, in recent years, he has spent most of his time in Dubai.

It was in Dubai that he was arrested in 2022 during a large international police operation, but he was released again approximately two months later.

His problems were not over, as the Dutch Public Prosecution Service filed a criminal complaint against him.

He is suspected of smuggling around 2,500 kilograms of cocaine into the ports of Rotterdam and Hamburg, worth tens of millions of euros.

Gačanin is also suspected of smuggling chemicals for the production of methamphetamine, also known as crystal meth.

In that case, lawyers Laura Versluis and Leon van Kleef entered into so-called procedural agreements with the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.

This means that the Public Prosecution Service and the defense agree that the lawyers waive the right to conduct an investigation, and in return, the Public Prosecution Service will not be too ambitious regarding the sentence.

Ultimately, the parties agreed on a sentence of seven years in prison and a fine of one million euros. The court agreed with this and sentenced Gačanin in accordance with the request of the Public Prosecution Service.
