Dr. Jožef Kunič: Border Issue – Bilateral Problem or EU Problem?

LJUBLJANA, (Patria) - The collapse of the bipolar system during the Cold War and the transition to a unipolar system, and in a later period, a return which increasingly shows a multipolar order, has left behind many unresolved issues, which were previously latent and could not come to the forefront due to autocratic regimes. Now such issues are becoming increasingly relevant, manifesting through the rise of nationalism, fascist ideologies, and the growth of terrorism, writes Ambassador Dr. Jožef Kunič, a member of the International Institute IFIMES, honorary president of the Slovenian Society for International Relations (SDMO), and former Slovenian ambassador to Iran and France.

He analyzed contentious border issues and poses the question of whether these are bilateral problems or EU problems, reports the Patria agency.

Kunič writes that in the Western Balkans, many conflicts during the 1990s in the newly formed states are of such a nature that they carry the scent of nationalism, religion, and different social conditions, "in short, they are such that reaching a compromise is practically impossible."

"We can even read that a well-known Byzantine gamble is being played, fertilized with testosterone nationalism – it looks good from the outside, but at home, preparations are made for no concessions. We notice that in the region, there is no tradition or culture of compromise. Whoever achieves a compromise has conceded and is a 'loser'. Even though a compromise might be good in the long run, perhaps it could bring significant positive results, it could be fatal for the politician who achieved it in the short term," writes Dr. Kunič.
