Among the victims who were rescuing a five-day-old baby today was a Bosnian. Born in Doboj, the pilot of the crashed helicopter Omer Mehić was one of the best pilots in the Serbian Army, stated Defence Minister Bratislav Gašić, as reported by the Patria news agency.
As stated, Mehić saved more than 1,000 people during various missions in his service.
"This tragedy has also shown, unfortunately, that people are the best thing Serbia has," Gašić told Tanjug.
Aviation journalist Petar Vojnović points out that Omer Mehić was one of the most experienced pilots of that type of aircraft in the Serbian Army.
Gašić emphasised that it was Mehić who piloted the helicopter that transported Prime Minister Vučić from Feketić to Dimitrovgrad last year, and as "Blic" reports, he was also a crew member during last year's floods.
Mehić, according to the Army, went through all stages from flight instructor to rescue team leader, and in May 2008, he survived the crash of a "Gazela M-8" helicopter.
The Gazela helicopter then fell into a metre-deep water and mud in the middle of Rusanda.
At that time, two military pilots were injured - co-pilot Dejan Lekić suffered serious injuries, a fracture of the right lower leg, and Omer Mehić, who was piloting the "Gazela", came out with cuts and scratches on his face and body, as reported by B92.
