How long will Komšić bear the burden of cowardice of Bosniak political elites

(Patria) - In the past month, the Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić, has twice stepped out of his political comfort zone. First, he politely ended an interview with a journalist who openly denies genocide and does not accept the verdicts of international courts, something that ultimately everyone should do.

Then, in Montenegro, he publicly warned diplomats not to relativize the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina in closed meetings by claiming that "everyone committed genocide."

It is interesting that Komšić is doing exactly what every Bosniak politician should have done long ago. Instead of acting like Komšić, Bosniak politicians insist mournfully on respecting the "Inzko Law," and that only declaratively, without a concrete stance or drawing a red line of elementary dignity. Today, when the war criminal Slobodan Praljak is flown across Herzegovinian stadiums and when fascism increasingly narrows our framework for action, the responses are ever weaker and more faceless!

Komšić has been exposed to both praise and criticism for his clear human stance on genocide. His stance is interpreted and perceived as an incident, but it should actually be the normal behavior of anyone who cares about a democratic society. Just as one should not negotiate about human rights in the Constitution and the electoral system, there is also no negotiation about historical facts, especially since the victims of these crimes still suffer.

At its core, Komšić is doing what Bosniak politicians should do but will not. Instead, they think about what foreigners will say, or what the continuators of criminal policies and ideologies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the neighborhood will say. However, it seems that Bosniak politicians were just waiting for someone who would be more consistent than them in fundamental state principles, while they are busy with eternal coalition acrobatics.

The question is only how long the Bosniak elite will push generational problems into the hands of foreign and domestic subcontractors, while through their media labeling Komšić as a factor that disturbs the ethnic balance and, by not yielding to foreigners, supposedly leads the state into quarrels.

The Bosniak elite, having not learned the lesson from the war and after 2006, is still waiting for Biden to gift them a state for New Year's. Komšić, taught by front-line experience, probably knows that both enemies and political opponents give you only what you fight for yourself.

Is it not precisely for this reason that Komšić is an unwanted guest at the table where changes to the Election Law of Bosnia and Herzegovina are negotiated with international officials, because there is too much truth in what he says.
